There are several do-it-yourself project options for anyone looking to refurbish old kitchen furniture. With only a few steps you can take a worn old kitchen hutch and turn it into the focus piece of the dining room.
Start by taking an inventory of any scratches and dents. Some of these imperfections can be sanded down. For deeper grooves, dents and scratches use a product such as Mix ‘N’ Fix. Apply the putty substance into the grooves and dents and let it dry. Once dry, sand the area until it smoothly matches the rest of the piece.
The next step is to change the color. If you want a natural wood finish you will need to sand your old kitchen hutch before using wood stain. Be sure to follow the directions on the can of stain. For an easier fix, find a color of spray paint that matches the decor and spruce the hutch up with a fresh new color.
Consider using black for a sleek, modern look. Whether staining or painting an old kitchen hutch one needs to take care to cover the glass display panels before painting. Simply use painting tape and old newspapers to keep the glass panes safely covered.
There are a couple of options to refurbish a kitchen hutch with broken panes of glass. One option is to order a new pane from your local hardware store. Be sure to have the right measurements and consider taking a pane of glass from the piece to ensure accurate measurements.
For a different look, add fabric to match or contrast with the decor, or bring a splash of color. Remove the glass panes altogether and cut the fabric in squares a few centimeters longer than the panes. Stretch the fabric taut over the open space on the inside of the hutch door and attach it with a staple gun.
A great looking refurbished kitchen hutch is just a couple of steps away.
