If you only use your flannel sheets throughout the cold weather months, it is important to find a storage method that will keep them looking fresh, even after months of disuse. Though they can simply be placed into a linen closet when not in use, there are things that anyone can do to make these high quality sheets last longer. In order to make your sheets last through many years of use, consider adopting some of these storage tips each spring when you put your heavy sheets away.
It may seem like common sense, but it is absolutely crucial that flannel sheets be clean when they are put away for the spring and summer. If your sheets are in relatively good condition, putting them through a regular wash cycle may be all that is required. However, if while washing your sheets you notice any stains or odors, they should be dealt with before being put away. Regular stain removers tend to work well with flannel. Before putting them into the washing machine, pre-treat any and all stains, no matter how minor. Stains that are allowed to set for months without being addressed will often become impossible to remove later.
If wrinkle free sheets are a priority, consider ironing them before they are folded. By taking special care to remove any wrinkles before they are folded, you will make putting them on the bed, without needing a spin through the dryer cycle, far easier. Fitted sheets can be difficult to fold well. Those who are especially dedicated may want to invest in a folding board. These can make folding anything, regardless of the size, a one person job, and will ensure that all your linens are a uniform size and shape. Folding boards are often available for less than $20 and may be used to fold an fabric item.
Instead of putting them directly into the closet, encase them in a plastic storage bag. This will provide an extra layer of protection from dust and eliminate the need to wash them again before they can be used. For homes in which space is an issue, bags that vacuum seal will be more compact and allow you to fit more sheets into a small closet space. These bags are reusable, and can be used for storing anything that is only used seasonally.
Storing your purple flannel sheets correctly will keep them in good condition throughout the summer and get them ready for use right out of the closet when the weather cools.
